FAQ About Gas Fire Installations
Who should service my fire and how often?
Servicing must be undertaken by a Gas Safe registered installer (Direct Gas) on an annual basis. Expect to pay between £60 and £100 for a gas fire service.
Are fires easy to light and operate?
We aim to design all of our fires to be easy to use and simple to operate
All gas fires come with traditional rotary control which incorporates a piezo spark ignition, and is fully variable between the preset HIGH and LOW settings.
Selected appliances in the Focal Point Fires range are available with remote control. The remote control option enables control of the appliance from the comfort of your armchair, a feature especially beneficial to the elderly, disabled or infirm.
Our range of electric fires feature high-level switches that are purposely positioned with the elderly in mind.
Focal Point Fires
100% Efficient Flueless Gas Fires
Flueless fires incorporate the latest in gas fire technology and do not need a chimney or flue to operate – so all the heat produced goes directly into the room.
Flueless fires are a great way to make a real contribution towards reducing your CO² emissions, which contribute to climate change and more importantly, reduce your fuel bills.
Flueless appliances incorporate the latest in gas fire technology, and do not require any flue or chimney. Instead, the combustion gases pass through a catalytic converter mounted inside the appliance, which converts the poisonous Carbon Monoxide to harmless Carbon Dioxide and water vapour. This then vents back into the room, resulting in an appliance which is 100% efficient.
Flueless appliances require nothing more than an 8mm gas supply, together with minimum room size and ventilation requirements.
Conventional Inset Gas Fires
This category describes flues already built into your home, which travel vertically through your property and terminate through the roof. These flues rely on the natural circulation of air through the room and up the flue to expel the combustion gases of an appliance.
There are three separate types of flue found within homes: Conventional Chimney. typically of brick construction; Prefabricated Flue, usually a metal flue connected to a flue box into which the appliance is installed; Precast Flue. formed from hollow blocks which form the flue up to the roof of the property.
For homes without a chimney but still a traditional inset gas fire is desire a powaflue (pf) version is available on selected products. Powaflue fires use a short length of twin-walled flue to expel waste gases. The Powaflue appliance is not sealed from the room, instead it is open fronted and draws air from the room to use in the combustion process. Waste gases are then pulled through the flue tube by an electric fan assembly which is discreetly mounted to the outside wall. A power supply is required to operate a powaflue appliance.
Electric Fires
When gas is not an option, the technology of an electric fire can still provide your home with flickering flames and realistic glowing fuel bed found within a ‘real’ fire.
You can now have a choice of either wall mounted, traditional inset or even an electric stove.
The main benefit of an electric appliance is ease of installation. Without the constraints of gas supplies and flues, our range of electric fires simply require provision of a mains socket close to the appliance location. Focal Point Fires electric appliances can be located into an existing fireplace opening or mantle/marble set to take the rebate of the appliance.
All fires feature independent flame effects, a ‘cool-blow’ facility that allows operation of the fan without heat, and a switchable. 1kW/2kW fan assisted heater.

What is a combi boiler?
A combi boiler provides heating and hot water directly from the boiler.
Here’s an example of a central heating and hot water system layout using a combi boiler:
A combi (or combination) boiler is an ingenious space-saving idea, and an increasingly popular choice in UK homes. In fact, combis now account for well over half of all the new domestic boilers installed in Britain every year.
A combi boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler, combined (hence the name) within one compact unit. Therefore, no separate hot water cylinder is required, offering space saving within the property.
Further benefits of a combi boiler are significant savings on hot water costs and the fact that hot water is delivered through your taps or shower at mains pressure. So you can enjoy powerful showering* without the need for a pump.
Another combi boiler benefit is that it can generally save you money on installation time and costs, since no tank in the roof space means less pipe work and a shorter installation time.
Heating your home – advice on boilers, heating controls and renewable technologies
Choosing a new appliance to heat your home can be a daunting task, raising questions such as: Which heating product do I need? Which type of heating system? What‘s the back-up like? How can I find a reputable installer? We can help you to find answers to all your questions.
Boilers – all you need to know
If your boiler is over 15 years old and your annual fuel bill is high, you might want to consider getting a new one installed. Householders who have had their existing boiler for ten years or more could save up to £250 a year*, by simply upgrading to a condensing model.
Worcester’s Greenstar range of gas and oil-fired boilers are all over 90% efficient and ‘A’ rated for efficiency, which means they are better for the environment as well as reducing fuel bills.
Temperature controls
Depending on the size of your boiler and the heating load within, the operating efficiency of a condensing boiler can be significantly enhanced by up to 13% when installed with the correct controls. By reducing the temperature on your thermostat by 1°C you could save 10% off your annual fuel bill. The value of getting the correct heating controls is often overlooked so talk to your installer who will be able to advise you.
Renewable technology to heat your home
Solar water heating systems
Our Greenskies solar panels work by absorbing solar energy to provide hot water for your home, even on cloudy days. A well-sized solar panel system could provide up to 60% of your annual hot water requirements.
Image of Solar panel, cylinder, heat pump and boilers The heat generated by the panels is pumped directly into a twin-coiled water cylinder and the boiler works alongside this technology to ensure a constant supply of hot water all year round.
Air source heat pumps
Greensource air source heat pumps extract energy from the air outside and use it to heat a home and its hot water supply, replacing the need for a boiler.
Our air source heat pumps come in two options: air to water heat pumps which heat a building through radiators or under-floor heating and air to air systems which product warm air that’s circulated for space heating. They work very effectively even when the temperature outside is as low as -20°C.
Ground source heat pumps
Ideal if you’re building or renovating your own home, our Greenstore ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) take solar energy stored in the ground and use it to meet the heating and hot water needs of an entire household. This technology also replaces the need for a boiler and is a perfect partner for under-floor heating and radiators.
Ground source heat pumps are run by electricity but users can reduce this cost by subscribing to a green tariff scheme which offers discounts on electricity used to promote renewables. As energy bills are reduced, GSHPs offer a payback which significantly betters those of other renewable technologies.
